Topeka, Kansas – In an unexpected move, Shirley Phelps (the matron of the Westboro Baptist Church) admited on a radio program that her family physically abuses children. Watch the video of the interview below.

The interview was between Shirley Phelps and David Pakman over the story of a hacker group threatening to take down the website of the Westboro Baptists. I haven’t been covering this story because I try not to give much press to Westboro. Long story short: a letter circulated from the infamous hacker group “Anonymous” threatening to take down Westboro’s website unless they stopped preaching hate. Westboro responded with a letter back, essentially saying “Bring it.” We then found out that “Anonymous” never sent the original letter, and it probably came from Westboro themselves, trying to get more press coverage.
This interview is a couple of days old, before we found out that the Anonymous letter was a hoax.
But listen to what else Shirley has to say. Pakman presses her on claims made in the past that the Westboro clan abuses their children and Shirley responds by saying that hitting children is part of “teaching children exactly like their creator told them to do it.”

"Eric, trying to have this (civil rights) conversation with you is ultimately like trying to teach a pig to dance, it just annoys the pig. So Eric, sorry to annoy you."

Oh my God the child has been given the ultimatum, pre-birth, to obey the rhetoric of WBC. Thank you for the great Video Eric. Another fantastic cover.
Wow I have not ever heard someone actually speak like that especially on the radio. It is honestly like listening to someone who would be an excellent psychology subject.
Let’s be careful with the facts. In the interview, she did _not_ admit “that her family physically abuses children”, nor did she refer to “hitting children”.
What she referred to was “spanking”. Now, I don’t agree with spanking, nor with just about anything the WBC says, but I think it’s important not to distort the situation by putting words in her mouth that she didn’t say. Currently in the United States, spanking is legal and does not constitute physical abuse, so the two things should not be implicitly equated.
Isn’t it funny that she expects the interviewers to be civil with her but she doesn’t have to return the courtesy?
